The increase in oil production from the Cepu Block by 30,000 barrels per day by Pertamina attracted attention as a significant step in Indonesia’s efforts to achieve better energy security. This step was inaugurated by President Prabowo Subianto on June 27, 2025 and was seen as part of a strategy to maximize the potential of Indonesia’s natural resources while reducing dependence on imports of fuel oil.
According to a member of the House of Representatives Commission VI, Sartono Hutomo, this increase in production shows Pertamina’s commitment in meeting the direction of the government to increase national production. At present, the Cepu Block contributes around 25% to total Indonesian oil production. With the addition of production from this project, the total daily production can be close to 180 thousand barrels, making it one of the most productive blocks in the country.
Sartono also explained that Pertamina’s efforts in the Cepu Block not only included an increase in production volume, but also improvement of technology and operational efficiency. This is an indication that the BUMN plays more than just a business; They also maintain the sovereignty of the country’s energy. “By increasing domestic production, we strengthen energy security and improve trade balance,” he explained.
Pertamina’s commitment to increase oil production in the Cepu Block Selas with the vision of the Prabowo-Gibran government to realize energy self-sufficiency. In addition to the economic impact, this step is expected to reduce the burden of the state budget due to subsidized fuel imports. At the same time, this step is in line with the government’s target to increase national oil production to 1 million barrels per day before 2030.
M Kholid Syeirazi, Director of the Center for Energy Policy, appreciated Pertamina’s efforts to increase national lifting. He stressed the importance of this project in achieving energy security and supporting government production targets. Kholid also stated that Pertamina was the spearhead in meeting the needs of domestic energy, with a contribution of more than half of national needs.
President Prabowo Subianto expressed his gratitude for the potential of Indonesia’s energy resources. In his statement, he stated that energy is an important part of maintaining the nation’s sovereignty. He stressed that the steps of the government and Pertamina reflect collective efforts to optimize the resources owned.
Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Simon Aloysius Mantiri, emphasized that this project also involved the use of domestic technology. The drilling project in the Banyu Urip Infill Clastic (BuIC) field uses a Rig designed and built in Indonesia, which shows the ability of national innovation in the upstream oil and gas sector. Simon explained, “This project shows how innovation and collaboration can increase production and support the achievement of national production targets.”
Meanwhile, in an effort to support a sustainable energy transition, Pertamina also focuses on developing new renewable energy (EBT). Sartono stressed that the development of EBT must be done fairly and efficiently, without burdening the community. The support of the House of Representatives Commission VI will continue to be given to ensure that the energy transition roadmap is carried out comprehensively in accordance with the mandate of the law.
Thus, the increase in production from the Cepu Block is one of the important steps in Indonesia’s journey towards better energy security. This step not only strengthens Indonesia’s position in meeting domestic energy needs, but also contributes to global efforts in controlling climate change by increasing the ratio of net energy mix.
