The Vatican proposes to create a Russian-Ukraine peaceful path, this is the Kremlin response

The Vatican holy throne government shows its commitment to support peaceful efforts in Russian and Ukraine conflicts. This was revealed by Pope Leo XIV through the Vatican Foreign Minister, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who offered the Vatican as the location of negotiations between the two countries last week. This offer is considered a positive step in overcoming a long time ago.

In his statement, Parolin said, “If necessary, providing the Vatican, the Holy throne, as a direct meeting place between the two parties.” This plan emerged after the failure of the peace negotiations in Istanbul, where Russian President Vladimir Putin was absent even though Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky came to hold talks. The failure indicates the big challenges faced in bridging the dialogue between the two parts.

The negotiations carried out some time ago in Istanbul did not succeed in achieving a ceasefire. Putin firmly rejected Zelensky’s proposal to meet in the forum, and former US President Donald Trump stated that every negotiations would not produce significant results without a direct meeting between him and Putin.

Responding to the offer from the Vatican, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that they already knew the initiative. However, the offer was not discussed in a recent telephone conversation between Trump and Putin. Peskov noted that Russia still had not taken a formal attitude regarding the acceptance or rejection of the offer from Pope Leo.

He said, “Everyone knows about Pope Leo’s initiative because it is delivered directly from the Vatican government.” Although Russia has not made an official decision, Peskov confirmed that they appreciate every effort aimed at bridging this protracted conflict.

Kremlin appreciates every party that offers a contribution to solving this problem. “Of course, Russia is grateful to all parties who are ready to contribute,” Peskov added when giving comments about the support of the Vatican.

On the other hand, Donald Trump showed his support for the Vatican initiative to host a peaceful negotiations. He argued that it was immediately possible to realize the meeting. “(The Vatican) as represented by the Pope, has said that they are very interested in hosting negotiations. Let’s start the process!” he exclaimed.

The telephone meeting between Trump and Putin took place on May 19, 2025, and the focus of their conversation was regarding the ceasefire negotiation in Ukraine. Trump noted his hope that Russia and Ukraine immediately began the negotiation process towards a ceasefire, although there was no concrete guarantee he received from Putin regarding the results of the conversation.

Even with Putin who stated that efforts to end the war were on the right track and that Russia was ready to work with Ukraine in achieving a peaceful agreement. The hope of achieving a peaceful agreement will strengthen with the support of various parties, including the Vatican and former leaders of large countries, such as Trump.

At present, the Vatican remains committed to taking an active role in facilitating this peaceful negotiation. This step is expected to create a way for more stable peace in an area affected by prolonged conflict. This effort is increasingly relevant, given the urgent need for peaceful settlement to avoid the fall of more victims from both parties.
