Central Aceh Disaster Emergency: Access Paralyzed, Loss of Life, and Thousands Displaced
Continuous heavy rain over the last few days in the Aceh region has led to a major disaster in Central Aceh – flash floods and landslides that paralyzed almost all road access and forced the district government to declare a disaster emergency status.
Landslides & Floods: Real Impacts for Residents
The disaster occurred Wednesday (26 November 2025) evening, causing landslides at a number of points in the mountains, and floods overflowing in a number of rivers. As a result, four major landslide points were recorded with fatalities — as many as nine people died due to being buried by landslide material. Apart from the loss of life, the impact on community activities was severe: almost all land access towards and out of Central Aceh declared paralyzed. Provincial and district roads were cut off, many bridges were damaged, and land transportation routes – both two-wheeled and four-wheeled – were impassable. This impact left Central Aceh completely surrounded — there were no routes in or out.
Thousands of People Forced to Flee, Logistics Crisis Threatened
The government recorded more than 1,000 souls directly affected by the disaster — many houses were damaged, agricultural land was contaminated with mud, and isolation made distribution of aid very difficult. One of the most surprising news: residents in several villages have not been able to be evacuated due to limited heavy equipment and cut off access. This raises concerns about the possibility of additional victims if the rains return or further landslides occur.
Government Announces Emergency Status, Requests National Assistance
Responding to this situation, the Central Aceh Regency Government through Regent Haili Yoga determined the status disaster emergency on November 27, 2025. Regional officials have requested support from the Aceh Provincial Government and the center, including sending heavy equipment, relief helicopters, as well as SAR and rapid evacuation teams. The government stated that the main priority at this time is to save victims – especially those who are still isolated – as well as opening road access to ensure the smooth supply of logistical aid.
Hope this becomes a momentum for community awakening and solidarity
The crisis that hit Central Aceh reminds us how fragile the condition of infrastructure is in mountainous areas that are prone to landslides. However, behind this sadness, there is also hope: the spirit of mutual cooperation among residents, the government’s quick action, and solidarity from outside the region can be the strength to rise again. If access is reopened, aid arrives quickly, and rehabilitation is taken seriously — Central Aceh can inch towards recovery.
Let us pray that the residents who are victims will be given fortitude, that the families left behind will be given comfort, and that our brothers and sisters who have fled can quickly return home safely.
“Central Aceh is under siege today — but our spirit must not be suppressed.”
Hopefully this tragedy will strengthen collective awareness: that protecting nature, paying attention to drainage, and preparing for disaster preparedness must be a shared priority.
