Stroke cases that attack young age are increasingly worrying. The latest data from the Indonesian Health Survey 2023 shows the prevalence of stroke in this country reaches 8.3 per 1,000 population. Stroke is now one of the main causes of health financing, with an estimated cost of Rp 5.2 trillion. The increase in stroke cases among people under 45 years old is closely related to an unhealthy lifestyle and lack of control of risk factors.
Neurologist from PON Hospital, Dr. Reza Aditya Arpandy, SPS, highlighted that around 90 percent of stroke cases in this category can be prevented. Risk factors that are often found are hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, and lack of physical activity. “Stroke at a young age is usually associated with risk factors that can be prevented,” explained Dr. Reza.
Furthermore, Dr. Reza revealed that in addition to lifestyle factors, there are also other factors that play a role in cases of stroke in young patients, such as congenital abnormalities in brain blood vessels, such as arterovenous malformation (AVM) or aneurysm. “This disorder makes blood vessels more susceptible to rupture and can cause bleeding,” he added.
As a precautionary step, the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) has made an effort to increase early detection of dyslipidemia in diabetic patients and hypertension. The target in 2024 is reaching 90 percent early detection throughout Indonesia, but currently the achievements of early detection are only around 11.3 percent. This shows the need for more massive efforts by involving various parties, both from the health sector, academics, to community organizations.
The following is a summary of stroke risk factors at a young age:
- Hypertension: High blood pressure is one of the main causes of stroke that can be prevented.
- Diabetes: High blood sugar increases the risk of stroke.
- High cholesterol: Dyslipidemia can cause blockages in blood vessels.
- Smoke: This habit increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.
- Obesity: Overweight becomes a problem that must be handled.
- Lack of physical activity: Sedentary lifestyle contributes to increasing risk factors.
It is important for individuals, especially young ones, to realize that a healthy lifestyle is very influential on brain health and the risk of stroke. Managing stress, doing regular exercise, and eating nutritious foods are preventive measures that must be taken.
In this context, Dr. Reza stressed the importance of a comprehensive examination to determine the exact cause of stroke in young patients. By knowing the underlying factors, follow -up for repeated stroke prevention can be done more effectively.
Awareness of the risk of stroke among the younger generation must be improved. The community needs to be encouraged to carry out regular health checks and live a healthy lifestyle to prevent strokes. The government, together with various organizations and the community, is expected to work together to educate and facilitate early detection and other prevention efforts. This is very important, considering that the increasing stroke cases not only affect individual health, but also have an impact on the national health system and the costs that must be incurred.
